The Problem(s) With Punishment and Pain/Fear-based Training Methods (Compiled by Steve Benjamin)

1) Stops behavior doesn’t teach proper behavior

2) Creates a negative association between the punished and the
punisher

3) Always rewarding for the punisher (because it stops behavior)

4) Results are unpredictable

5) Usually delivered much too late

6 )Not consistent:  Behavior must be punished EVERY time

7) Results in poisoned cues

8) Intensity must be high enough to STOP the behavior the first time

9 Potential to cause physical harm when delivered at sufficient
intensity

10) Can create a corresponding fear response which the animal can
generalize

11) Can increase the likelihood of aggressive responses through
Conditioned Emotional Responses (CERs)

12) Can lead to the suppression of behavior (warnings)
